My Hero

Tonight I got to meet my all-time favorite teacher, Mr. Rees, for the first time in ages. He was my art teacher three years in a row in high school. Not only did he teach me a lot about art, he taught me to believe in myself, and he showed me that there are sweet, sensitive husbands out there (I could just tell he was crazy about his wife and I loved that). Mr. Rees truly cared about each individual student. He made us each feel important. Once, when my art was supposed to be accepted in a high school art show at a local museum, and at the last minute, due to an error, the museum didn't hang my painting, Mr. Rees noticed me in near tears and ended up hanging my painting in a hall in the high school. He had a unique approach to teaching. He's the one who got me interested in figure drawing. He invited his students to his home for Japanese food, took us (the art club) camping at Zion National Park, and even cared enough to come to my wedding! He was fun, quirky and caring. The best teacher anyone could ask for. I'm thankful for amazing teachers. In my mind, the good ones are pretty much rock stars.

Hope

I finally got off my lazy bum and painted. And it was sooooo fuuuuun! I always forget how much I love painting until I paint and then I think, "What took me so long?" I did more experimenting with dots/fingerprints. I kind of like how it turned out.

Easy Coconut Squash Curry Soup

I just made the best soup ever. I was in the mood for something new and exciting--I just couldn't bear facing another spaghetti dinner--so I looked at several recipes online and got some ideas and came up with this recipe myself. It was sooooo yummy. I'm definitely going to have to make it again. And again and again...

1 bag of 10 oz. frozen butternut squash
1 onion (cut into fourths)
1 can garbanzo beans
3/4 cup coconut milk
3-4 cloves garlic (or 1 teaspoon garlic powder)
1 teaspoon Spike (or use vegetable broth instead of water if you don't have Spike)
1 teaspoon curry powder
salt and pepper to taste

Blend squash, onion, beans and garlic together in a cup and a half water until smooth. Add spices and simmer for about twenty minutes. Serves four. Enjoy.

Chloe

I thought I'd try the spot thing again. I really like how it turned out. I really enjoyed making this one. My job is so fun, it's ridiculous. :o)

Wet Kisses

This painting was inspired by the love I have for dogs. Whenever I see a dog (as long as it's not barking at me) I get really, really happy. I had a few dogs of my own. I miss them so, so, so much. I hope to add a new one to our family someday. Labradoodles, Airdales Terriers and Scottish Terriers are pretty cute--and hypoallergenic. Maybe someday I'll get one of those.

Shhh

A fun little painting I did while listening to fun music, the new Neon Trees album. If you haven't heard it yet you're missing out--it's eighties-licious!

My Favorite Painting Tunes

Music plays a huge role in my painting. It inspires me and brings out certain emotions that come through in each painting. Emotive expression is my main focus as an artist, so the music I paint to happens to be especially passionate. Below I've listed my very favorite tunes to paint to. They're great to listen to in general too. If you're smart, you'll check them out. ;o)
The Best of Delerium. Beautiful, ethereal music that takes you to a whole other world.
Muse - Absolution. This is, in my humble opinion, the most passionate CD out there.  Also one of the very best.
The Cure - Bloodflowers. The Cure is one of my all-time favorite bands, and this is one of  my favorite Cure albums (along with Head on the Door and Wish).  Pretty, moody tunes--just how I like 'em.
VAST - Turquoise and Crimson. VAST has been around for  awhile, but I am a new fan. Jon Crosby 's so talented--and I've had the pleasure of meeting him!
Damien Rice - O. This is my all-time favorite go-to album for painting. I have to practice self-control and listen to it sparingly so I don't wear it out--that's how good it is.
Tori Amos--Little Earthquakes. This album rips your heart right out of your chest, stomps on it a few times, throws it in a food processor, then shoves it back in. Great for angry/sad days.
Coldplay - A Rush of Blood to the Head. This band is wildly popular for a reason.
Imogen Heap - Speak for Yourself. This stuff is brilliant. Imogen is my very favorite female artist. Another album I have to listen to in moderation so I don't get sick of it.

Early Birthday Present

I love the beach. It's one of the most magical places on earth. I love breathing in salty air and coconut oil, feeling the cool, moist breeze comb through my hair and kiss my skin. I love being hypnotized by the endless rising and falling of the waves, feeling the cool water crash into my ankles as my feet get sucked down into the grainy sand. Nature can be so soothing--sharks and jellyfish aside. I adore tropical vacations--particularly cruises. Don't get me started about cruises. Anyway, I also hope to live near the ocean someday, it's been a longtime dream of mine.

So when I found this painting on eBay, I had to have it. When my parents found out I was lusting after it, they decided to buy it for me as an early birthday present. Isn't it gorgeous? The surprising part is it was dirt cheap. Find more lovely seascapes on Ken's website, here.

Lost in Thought

The colors in this painting make me happy. I love certain color combinations. Some of my favorites are pale turquoise and red, purple and orange, pale turquoise and brown and lime green and red. When I tell people how happy color combinations make me, many of them look at me like I just told them I like to eat socks or something. Maybe it's an artist thing...

My Dream Furniture

Furniture can be a form or art. Someday I hope to buy my dream home near the ocean and fill it with beautiful, funky furniture that are as fun to look at as it is functional.

I love this zebra chair. I've been wanting one for years and years.

Asymmetrical chairs are, in my humble opinion, uber cool.

I love the bold red color of this couch. I do like the more modern looking ones, but comfort is a must.

In case you haven't noticed my now, I love curlycues! You will find them in most of my latest paintings.

Green is my very favorite color. These table and chairs make me happy!

Also a cool dining room set. I think I'd have a hard time choosing.

I love Indian-style patchwork. I've wanted one on my bed for years. Only problem is they're so pretty, I'd be afraid to ever lay on one.

This one's lovely, too.

Another great choice. What's a girl to do?

This bookcase is fierce!

Simple but still fabulous.

I want one of these for all the jewelry I plan to buy, hahaha. Okay, I don't plan on buying that much jewelry, so maybe I can store keepsakes in it, too.

This is a painting by my favorite living artist, Charles Dwyer. Dwyer said if he could have one wish: "I'd like to have every household own something original, by an artist of its choice." My choice would be one of his. Too bad they're waaaay out of my price range, right now at least.

The Dress 2

I had a bad day yesterday. Watching The Hunger Games cheered me up; creating this painting also helped (which I did today, by the way). Nothing beats art therapy. Except maybe a tropical cruise.

Flaming June At Night

This painting is a tribute to one of my favorite paintings, Flaming June, by Lord Frederic Leighton. I also painted it to put on my bedroom wall. I would buy a print of the original, but I hate prints. I'm kind of a snob that way. A print is like a piece of art without the soul. On that note, buy prints of my art here: imagekind. All kidding aside, it was fun taking a classical style painting and giving it a whimsical, impressionistic twist.

Sometimes

This is the first painting I've done since the move from Orem to Springville (AKA Art City). The model is my brother. He's an uber talented indie film maker. He wanted a "light purple" face, so I gave him one.

Awaiting the Muse

The model is actually my sister who happens to be a very prolific and talented musician. This is the second time I've painted her with her guitar. Remember her face because she's going to be big some day.

I love the color I chose for the background--florescent red. I actually got the bottle of paint for 90% off at an arts and crafts store going out of business. Score!

Daydream 2

Once again I experimented with a limited and muted palette. I'm really pleased with the results--I think the dark colors really create a mood. The music, I'm sure, helped, too. I turned to my favorite painting music, Damien Rice's O. If you haven't heard it, you're really missing out.
