I love the color I chose for the background--florescent red. I actually got the bottle of paint for 90% off at an arts and crafts store going out of business. Score!

Once again I experimented with a limited and muted palette. I'm really pleased with the results--I think the dark colors really create a mood. The music, I'm sure, helped, too. I turned to my favorite painting music, Damien Rice's O. If you haven't heard it, you're really missing out.

Break

After 30+ years of continuous drawing and painting, I have decided to take a much needed break from art. It may last a month, it may last a year, I don't know. It's time to focus on something else for awhile. Maybe I'll start swimming every day again. Maybe I'll learn a foreign language. The possibilities are limitless. The good news is, when I do pick up a brush again, I'll be painting with a brand new passion and enthusiasm.

When I was a kid I had a fierce passion for art. I was drawing, cutting, gluing, painting, sewing, sculpting or doing something creative nearly every day--just for the pure and simple fun of it. Over the years I've let criticism get to me and I've begun caring what others think and I've shoved myself into a box and allowed myself to limit and label my style and I've put so much pressure on myself to produce, I've managed to take a lot of the fun out of painting and drawing. Now what was once my leisure activity of choice feels more and more like a chore to cross off a list.

I desperately want to enjoy that playful feeling again. I think this break will help me achieve that. If you have any suggestions, any ideas to help be rediscover my love for art, I'd be more than thrilled to hear them. I'd do practically anything to get that passion back.

I enjoyed experimenting with a slightly muted palette. I achieved this by mixing a color with its complimentary color. So to make a muted green, I'd add a touch of red.

I was in a dark mood and painting this while listening to good old fashioned The Cure really cheered me up.

In the Flesh

Five years ago I got to spend five days in NYC with my brother and visit The Met and The MoMA. I got to see my very first Van Gogh--in the flesh. It was an exciting and surreal experience. It amazes me how differently you experience art in person. There's so much more richness and texture and LIFE in the painting. It's almost as if the painting is a living, breathing soul.

Last month I got to visit Washington, DC for the very first time and one of the highlights was The National Gallery of Art. I got to see more Van Gogh, along with some Monet, Toulouse-Lautrec and my favorite Modigliani.

I showed this painting to a friend and he said it looks like the subject has just gone through something tough--like she survived something. Interesting thing is, that statement totally applies to me. Funny how I transfer my emotions into my paintings, sometimes unconsciously.

What is Art? And More Importantly--Why is it Important?

Art is a lot of things. It can't be given a single definition. It has many purposes. To send a message. To tell a story. To beautify. To inspire. To connect. To express a feeling or emotion. To immortalize a person or event (especially applicable before we had cameras). To amuse or entertain. To shock. To decorate the bare spot above your couch. (The last one was kind of a joke.)

Some artists create purely for the process of creating. It's fun, it's therapeutic, it's exhilarating. They're driven to create. Some even hide or destroy their work when it's finished. They got what they wanted from the experience, so the end product is useless to them. Some artists create for the final outcome. They have something they want to express to the world. Most artists fall into both categories--the process of creating and the final result brings them equal amounts of satisfaction.

I think life can be both beautiful and ugly--depending on how you look at it. However, I think most people are struggling with the state the world is in right now. We live in a screwed up world, and if you turn on the news, you'll be bombarded by unbearable amounts of heartbreak and chaos and ugliness. I believe art plays a critical role in these times. I believe the world needs all the beauty people are willing to give it. And by beauty, I mean anything that inspires change, hope, joy, etc. Even a sad or dark piece of art can be beautiful because that piece might touch someone at the exact time they need it in their lives. They might momentarily feel, "Someone gets it. I'm not so alone after all."

I could go on for days and maybe just scratch the surface, but it's a fun question. What is art to you? I'm sure everyone has a different answer.

For as long as I can remember, I've had a thing for spirals. I'm not sure why. Was it because I subconsciously knew they had deeper meaning or was it because I simply thought they looked cool? What fascinates me is the spiral is actually a reoccurring shape in nature:

Fern frond
Big horn sheep

Weather.

Spiral aloe.

Seashell.

Spiral in outer space.

Snail.

Note the five spirals in my latest painting. One of the five is a little tricky to find.

Not only do I think the spiral can be funky and beautiful, it also has rich symbolic meaning. I knew it represented eternal life, but until now I didn't know it also symbolizes progress, fertility, birth, death, transformation, direction, initiation, growth, the soul, expansion, spiritual journey, cycles of life and time, the sun, centering, feminine energy, expanding, connection, balance, journeying, development and God.

I finally broke through my creative block and came up with this. I've always been drawn to color, but lately even more so. Perhaps it represents the happier time in my life I am experiencing.

This painting is titled "Wallflower", not because the woman is shy or socially awkward, but rather she is the one that observes at parties. People intrigue her, she likes to figure them out.

I'm Still Here

I haven't been painting as much lately, in part because I have a lot of big, life-changing events studding my recent life. Another reason--I have ran into a creative block. It's not that I'm not feeling creative, it's just that I am ready to make some changes with my art and I am in a sort of experimental mode. And experimenting can actually be scary and at times I freeze and do nothing.

So I ran into this book and I've started reading it, and it's actually quite good. It's interesting how the right books come at the right time for me. Hopefully I will de-slump soon. I'll keep you posted.

This One's For My Beloved Brother

This is a painting I just finished for my brother. My reference was actually from an old magazine ad* that my brother, for reasons I will not get into,** had hanging on the wall above his bed for years. Anyway, long story short, I agreed to paint this for him in exchange for his super nice digital (almost) SLR, which I am very much enjoying. Stay tuned, more exciting art adventures to come...

Unbending

I actually did this piece a while ago, but I just got around to photographing it. I titled it "Unbending" because this woman wants something, and there's no stopping her. Not surprisingly, I feel similarly right now. I have a few goals that I am very focused on these days. In fact, I find I can think of little else. I guess it really spoke to my mom, too. She fell in love instantly and bought it before I even photographed and posted it online. Ah, well, the lady gave birth to me, so she gets first dibs.
